Bicycle fair emphasizes safety

The New York Bicycling Coalition and other groups sponsored a fair in Huntington Station last month, in order to promote bicycle safety.

The fair's organizers drew attention to safety issues by giving away bikes and bicycle equipment to several lucky children. About 150 people attended the fair. In addition to bikes, organizers gave away Vests, reflectors, and lights.

Advocates for safe riding say they hope to amend the laws of New York State to protect cyclists more effectively, and to make drivers more aware of people riding bikes on Long Island. Angela Satcher, who organized the fair, said it was aimed at helping people who commute by bicycle, and raise drivers' awareness of the cyclists with whom they share the road.

Suffolk County police from Huntington Station's second precinct inspected bikes and measured helmets for the kids who came to the fair. Bikes for Kids, a program based at the precinct, gave away six bicycles—some to needy children, and others raffled off.

Two of the raffle winners were from Huntington. In addition, they were given locks, helmets, and reflectors. Their father said their first priority was always safety, so it was comforting to have the safety equipment as well as the new bicycles.

Events such as these can be enhanced when organizers work with flyer printing companies, which can create mailers and materials for posting to advertise the event.
