Just in time for the holidays, Bay Shore is letting people park without paying.
Angie Carpenter, the town supervisor, made the announcement and free parking started late in November on ‘Small Business Saturday’, a nationwide event that encourages people to go shopping in local standalone stores rather than large national chains. The free parking applies to all of Bay Shore's metered parking, including back lots. When special measures like this are instituted, officials could use poster printing to create Signs to place over existing signage.
Small Business Saturday was designed to remind people that local businesses are the backbone of the country's economy, and that supporting them allows them to create jobs, which in turn help local economies, and bring businesses to smaller downtown areas. When small businesses prosper, they generate the revenue necessary to help preserve those same downtowns.
Carpenter went on to ask residents to continue to “shop small” throughout December and into next year, pointing out that small businesses account for almost half of all private-sector employees. She also noted that small businesses help create and maintain the unique character and charm that goes along with shopping in a community's downtown. In 2017, approximately 43% of Americans supported small businesses in this way.
The free parking is available now, and will be available throughout the month of December, ending on January 1.
