The proposed rezoning has been suggested a few weeks after an announcement made by Mayor Bill de Blasio. That intervention had been in relation to the construction of thousands of apartments in a district of Queens.
According to the Manhattan plans, if the rail yard does become a tech center, then residential and retail development will also take place. New tech firms could use digital Business Cards from Central Islip to make themselves known.
The way forward taken may be influenced by the cost. However, Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez has suggested that a specific deal with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority could address that side of things.
Mr. Rodriguez said:
“Imagine having our very own marketplace for technological innovations, creating an environment that will attract advanced research and partners such as Google, Apple or Facebook.
“Yes! We will make this dream a reality.”
One of the reasons behind the confidence of Mr. Rodriguez is his perception that the yard area is underused. He has argued that displacement of enterprises would be unnecessary.
For the moment, the rail yard on 207th Street serves some active trains. However, it also keeps cars that have been retired. The New York Transit Museum will take some of these vehicles after their restoration.
