After scoring a resounding success at the Alive by the Bay festivals last summer, the owner of an Italian restaurant decided the time was right to open a Bay Shore location.
Salvatore and Christina Sorrentino have long wanted to open a restaurant in Bay Shore, and recently found the perfect spot. Earlier this year, they discovered the former Gino's Pizzeria on West Main Street was available, and grabbed it. Now they're planning to open ITA Kitchen later this year.
ITA—the initials mean Italian-American—will fill the gap Sorrentino feels exists in and around Bay Shore, where there are many pizzerias but few if any higher-end Italian restaurants. ITA aims to create a fun, casual environment but with the type of exemplary service usually found only in fine dining establishments.
The restaurant's footprint is 2,300 square feet, and will offer both table and booth seating, as well as a 20-foot bar. The eatery will be open Tuesday through Sunday, serving lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday. ITA Kitchen will serve only dinner on Saturday and Sunday, leaving weekend mornings free for patrons to schedule private events.
Nick Puelo, who will manage ITA, describes the menu as eclectic, using the basics of Italian cuisine to create innovative items, such as enormous veal-filled meatballs, and mac and cheese made with four cheeses.
