Residents of several communities have expressed concern abandoned homes, with the result that the Islip Town Board voted in early September to either board and clean up such houses, or demolish them completely.
In total, the board has highlighted 12 properties that it will work on, and is making plans to pull down another two. The result of this should be that the Central Islip area continues to be a desirable place to live and house prices are not dragged down by unattractive properties in the neighborhood.
In one instance, four Bay Shore residents spoke about a vacant house at which they claim to have seen raccoons. One resident, who has lived on Manor Lane where the house is located since 2003, says it has been vacant at least since that year.
The board approved resolutions to board up four homes in Bay Shore; two in Brentwood; two in Central Islip; and one each in East Islip, Ronkonkoma, and Holbrook. The board also voted to demolish two homes entirely: one in Bay Shore on Bay Shore Avenue, and one on Prospect Street in Central Islip.
Islip Township officials might consider working with a brochure or flyer printing company on a single-sheet flyer to be mailed to residents, explaining the decision and listing the properties to be boarded up or demolished.
