One of the originators of the era of “Girl Groups” is on the way to Bay Shore.
Shirley Alston Reeves co-founded the Shirelles, and was the group's lead singer. The ensemble comprised Reeves, whose maiden name was Shirley Owens, and her classmates Beverly Lee, Addie “Micki” Harris (now Addie Harris McFadden), and Doris Coley (Doris Kenner-Jackson). All African-Americans, the Shirelles were popular with all races, even before Motown popularized black musicians.
The first song the Shirelles released, “I Met Him on a Sunday,” was an instant hit, and the first in a long line of hits including “Soldier Boy,” which sold five million Copies. Perhaps their most famous song, written by Carole King and used in the film “Dirty Dancing,” was “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”
The Rhythm and Blues Foundation honored the Shirelles with their Pioneer Award in 1994, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two years later, and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
According to reviews, Reeves is still the best:
“Shirley's voice has stood the test of time and so has her energy level. She did all of the Shirelles hits as well as a selection of Motown chart busters. Shirley Rocks!”
