Double track between Ronkonkoma and Central Islip complete, governor says

On August 23, New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced that track laying between Ronkonkoma and Central Islip, a part of the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) Double Track project, was finished.

According to an article on Long Island.com, Governor Cuomo also said that work on the last part of the project, a new track between Central Islip and Farmingdale, has already started and should be finished on schedule, in 2018.

The double track runs from Ronkonkoma to Farmingdale, and will reduce delays on this stretch dramatically. It will also enable the railroad to provide more service at off-peak hours, since 13 miles of parallel track will have been added by the time the work is done.

The governor said the state is “moving aggressively” to modernize its mass transit systems. The improvements are not just to make things better for today's residents, but to encourage sensible, smart, and sustainable growth. Cuomo said that the idea of adding a second track on the Ronkonkoma Branch has been under discussion for years, but nothing was ever done. Now, infrastructure projects are in place to strengthen the economy of the region and improve commuters' experiences on Long Island. The governor says the state is “building today for a better tomorrow.”
