Dates set for summer concerts

The Long Island Philharmonic, the only professional symphony orchestra on Long Island, disbanded earlier this year, but the players are coming back for at least two concerts this summer, and the hope is the concerts will lead to reestablishing the symphony.

Islip Arts Council's executive director, Lynda Moran, and the Huntington Arts Council's performing arts director, John Chicherio, are both hopeful that the organization can be revived and bring music to the Central Islip area. Moran said there is a core group of supporters who are behind the idea of reestablishing a symphony on Long Island, and Chicherio said the orchestra was a “cherished institution”. He hopes to see a new organization, dedicated to classical music, emerge and carry on the symphony's legacy.

Maestro David Stewart Wiley, the music director of the philharmonic, says he is “cautiously optimistic” about the idea of a new symphony, because so many Long Island residents are upset about the closing, and want a classical music option there.

The performances, which are free, will be held in East Islip, at the Heckscher State Park on July 16; and in Huntington, at the Heckscher Park, on August 13. The concerts will be conducted by Maestro Wiley.

The concert organizers might like to work with a banner printing company to create festive, colorful Banners to hang throughout the venues for the concerts. Since Banners are sturdy, they are ideal for outdoor use.
