The New York State Legislature and the Islip Town Board have set plans in motion to create veterans' housing in a vacant park in Central Islip.
On June 15, at a special meeting, the town board approved a home rule resolution about the property. Accompanying legislation also passed in both chambers of the state legislature the following day. The resolution allows the town to swap Lowell Avenue Park with another nearby piece of land of comparable size, that can be used for recreational purposes. The park is between East Cedar Street and Cypress Street.
Local activist Nelsena Day, along with other residents, were behind the idea to transform the park, which has been problematic for years. Located close to a shopping center that has some vacancies, and having a gap in its fencing, has made it difficult for police to keep an eye on park activities, according to William Doherty, who is a deputy inspector with the Third Precinct of the Suffolk County police.
The community recently trimmed the overgrown area in the back of the park, and had a general clean-up, Doherty said. In addition, the park has been added to the sheriff's regular patrol schedule, to secure the site for future use.
Communities like these can benefit from working with a flyer printing company, which can create materials explaining complex projects in detail.
