Bay Shore restaurant back in business

The Milk and Sugar Café in Bay Shore has been transformed, and recently reopened as the new Barn Door 49, according to an article in Newsday.

Lenny and Gina Jaworowski – who cater barbecue, own a food truck specializing in gourmet cupcakes, and run Bay Shore's downtown Victorian Room – closed Milk and Sugar after nearly 20 years to revitalize and reopen it.

Barn Door 49 has a new facade, a new marquee sign, and a rustic country feel featuring heavy use of reclaimed wood. The Jaworowskis’ menu offers what they call “country and comfort food,” focusing on local seafood, seasonal ingredients, artisan cheeses, and pastured meats.

The renovation took six months. Gone are Milk & Sugar's sofas, replaced by a tavern with a marble-topped bar. A Vermont-style dining room, seen through an archway, offers reclaimed wood tables, with the same wood on the walls. Edison-bulb lights hang over the tables, comfortable banquettes topped with pillows invite diners to enjoy themselves, and a gas fireplace sits in the center of the space.

Chef Anthony Citarella is in charge in the kitchen, creating dishes featuring ingredients such as pork belly, lamb, and striped bass. Anthony Lucero is behind the bar, and will serve wine, beer, and cocktails.
