Hammerfall got started in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1993, headed by Oscar Dronjak, who came up with the idea of a new band while he was still with death metal outfit Ceremonial Oath. The original Hammerfall lineup comprised Dronjak, Jesper Strömblad (who was also in Ceremonial Oath), Mikael Stanne, Johan Larson, and Niklas Sundin.
Thus far, they have released 12 studio albums, dropping the latest, “Hammer of Dawn,” in 2022. A concert review says:
“They are one of those quintessential power metal bands that supply the audience with a string of riffs to rival their contemporaries, Iron Maiden and even Dragonforce.”
Also appearing is the hugely influential speed metal/power metal band from Germany, Helloween. They formed in Hamburg in 1984, and are often named as the pioneers of the power metal genre, which they introduced on their album “Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt. 1,” in 1987.
The original lineup comprised Kai Hansen, Michael Weikath, Markus Grosskopf, and Ingo Schwchtenberg. They have released 16 studio albums, with the latest, the self-titled “Helloween,” appearing in 2021, and hitting No. 35 on the U.S. charts. A review says:
“Helloween was phenomenal . . . gave the crowd a heavy dose of German Power Metal that one could only hope to experience . . .”
