Vegas event highlights indoor growing methods

An upcoming show in Las Vegas features how agricultural experts are growing crops indoors.

Indoor Ag-Con covers the technology used to grow crops in systems indoors, including aquaponic, aeroponic, and hydroponic techniques. The event gives a chance for policymakers, academics, produce buyers, agtech leaders, real estate developers, investors, growers, and industry suppliers and advocates to get together to learn about the latest developments in their industry. The material will be presented in formal proceedings at the conference, as well as exhibits and practical mini workshops.

Among the advancements under discussion is vertical farming, a concept that first arose early in the 20th century but has not been widely practiced. Crops grown this way, as the name implies, are grown in stacked layers, either vertically or horizontally. Some of the structures that have been chosen for this practice include abandoned mine shafts, tunnels, shipping containers, and buildings.

As is common in professional conferences, workshops are a large part of the event. This meeting begins with two pre-conference workshops, one a full day on “Advancing Hydroponics through Aquaponics,” and a half-day session discussing opportunities for field farmers moving to indoor agriculture.

There are two days of shorter sessions, where subjects to be discussed include managing pests, growing lettuce, and what traditional and indoor farming can learn from one another.

The conference is set for February 11 and 12 at The Westgate. Events like this are outstanding networking opportunities where Business Cards are exchanged.
