Manalapan to get into history spirit

The Spirit of the Jersey’s State History Fair is just around the corner in Manalapan.

The state’s 21 counties, plus New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, will have exhibits depicting five centuries of New Jersey history.

Programs will depict the literature, music, and soldiers’ personal accounts of their service in the Civil War. One presentation will be a replica of President Lincoln’s casket with an Honor Guard provided by the 14th New Jersey Volunteers, a local Civil War reenactment group. Another will be General Ulysses S. Grant, portrayed by Kenneth Serfass. Other historical figures from NJ’s past, such as Walt Whitman, Clara Barton, and George Washington, will also be relating stories about their contribution to the state and the nation. Vintage cars, an 1800s baseball game and horse-drawn plowing demonstrations are also on the agenda.

New to the fair will be a live radio show and also a representation of a U.S. Army radio show with entertainment resembling the kind that was sent to soldiers from WWII until the Vietnam War.
