Library to offer free Broadway tribute

To mark the 50th year of the opening night of Fiddler on the Roof, Monmouth County Library Headquarters will soon present, ‘Tradition! A Musical Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof’. The event will be free and everyone in Manalapan is invited.

The musical was the first Broadway play to run for over 3,000 performances. Along with the famous song ‘Tradition’, the play included musical favorites such as ‘If I Were A Rich Man’, ‘Sunrise, Sunset’, and ‘Matchmaker’, making it a subject for plenty of poster and catalog printing over the past five decades.

For the local celebration, violinist David Podles will discuss and demonstrate the different styles of Jewish music that were reflected throughout the musical. He will start with ancient Hebrew Nigun, continue with European Jewish pieces, and conclude with Freilehs, an integral part of Klezmer music that was played for dancing and celebrations.

Maggie Worsale, meanwhile, will be singing selections from the musical and is a singer with the Traveling Literary Theater whowas chosen as one of New York/New Jersey’s 10 Best Jazz singers in both 2009 and 2010. Her repertoire includes novelty songs, as well as Jazz and Broadway classics.

The tribute will be held Sunday, September 21, at 2:00 pm at the Monmouth County Library Head Quarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan.
