Library to mark mathematicians contributions
As well as the pie we eat, many in Manalapan like to celebrate the other kind of pi, the number 3.14159265359, at the local library’s International Pi Day event.
The upcoming event is free and suitable for all ages. It will be a celebration of math, science, and the people associated with these fields.
Just in time for his birthday, Albert Einstein, played by historical-reenactor Bill Agress, will be on hand to discuss his scientific discoveries and his life. Some topics he will be addressing will include his childhood hobbies, helping Princeton boys and girls with their homework, and the role the mathematical constant pi (π) played in his work. No doubt he also will be talking about his theory of relativity. Children may want pictures taken with the genius for later poster printing.
Agress portrays other historical figures such as George Washington, the American Revolution financier Haym Salomon, New Jersey representative in the signing of the Constitution Justice David Brearley, and New Jersey’s representative to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Hart. He has been reenacting these characters for over 30 years.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, which is designated as Pi Day because it reads 3-14 in mathematical form. It runs from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm at Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan.
