In order to ‘Celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s Legacy’ our local library will be presenting a live performance of the bard’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
This version will be family-oriented and is recommended for children 4th grade and up. The play, which is free to attend, is a romp through an enchanted wood where romantically inclined couples become enmeshed with fairies, magic spells, and each other.
The play will be performed by an educational touring company that calls itself Shakespeare Live. The troupe is from the Shakespeare Theatre of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Since its inception in 1997, the group has performed for over 600,000 elementary, middle, and high school students, and has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts.
There will be a 15-minute talkback session after the performance for the audience to ask questions. The troupe advises parents to prepare their children by discussing the play with them beforehand and reviewing audience etiquette.
The library sees this as a good opportunity to introduce children to Shakespeare. Text will be abridged for time’s sake, but the play will keep Shakespeare’s language intact.
Those interested will want to mark their Calendars for this Sunday, April 17. The event will be at the Library Headquarters at 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. Doors will open at 12:30 pm, with the performance starting at 2:00 pm.
