While many fourth-graders are trying to figure out how to get their hands on the newest toy, Julia Schaer and Mackenzie Maher from East Brunswick sold lemonade to raise $1,000 through their Let’s Fight Cancer Club last month.
The funds were donated to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) University Hospital in aid of pediatric patients. This kind of achievement could easily be listed in flyer printing for their club.
The 10-year-olds met as nursery school pupils, and their friendship helped them to start the Let’s Fight Cancer Club together. Maher explained to NJ.com that her motivation for getting involved comes from her grandfathers, both of whom have been afflicted with the disease. She describes cancer as “a war”, and urges people to act as “a soldier” in doing what they can to combat it.
Both the kids have sent handmade cards to the hospital’s pediatric patients. Schaer told NJ.com that she has enjoyed helping people for as long as she can remember, and that she has been raising money for charity throughout her life.
The RWJ also received a donation of $300 from the Warnsdorfer Elementary School’s student council. Those funds were raised by selling rainbow bracelets, snacks, and Valentine’s Day cards, as well as holding a movie night. That fundraiser was also spearheaded by Schaer.
