New Jersey International Film Festival comes to Rutgers University

Whether East Brunswick movie buffs are in the mood for full-length documentaries, animated flicks, or something in between, there’s material for all tastes at the New Jersey International Film Festival, coming soon to the area.

Having kicked off over the weekend, events will be held at the end of each week through June 14th at Rutgers University.

The films that will be shown were chosen by jury from 357 artist-submitted films, and a total of 24 were selected for the competition.

The chosen films include experimental works, short films, independent features, documentaries, and more, according to Al Nigrin, curator and executive director of the Rutgers Film Co-op and New Jersey Media Arts Center. However, he says that at the New Jersey festival, the circumstances that sometimes put individuals off other festivals – limousines, red carpets, flashbulbs – won’t be present. He described New Jersey’s festival as “easy, open, grassroots, and organic.”

Several of the films have ties to New Jersey filmmakers or settings, including ‘I Grew Up in Princeton’, ‘Simpler Times’, and ‘Rye Coalition’.

Tickets for the films cost $10 each, and often include attendance at a Q&A session with filmmakers, as well as free food. Aspiring filmmakers might consider investing in business card printing before the event to assist them in networking possibilities that evening.
