Hands on orchids class for kids planned near East Brunswick

Orchids, which may seem exotic but can be easy to grow, will be the focus of an upcoming East Brunswick event.

During the Discovering Orchids for Kids workshop, the participants will engage in hands on exploration of this diverse group of plants. They will learn about the many different shapes of orchid flowers and why this is important in attracting pollinators such as bees, flies and other insects. There will also be a discussion of where they grow, their role in their ecosystem and much more.

The session is open to children ages 8 to 12 as well as their chaperone. A part of the class will be spent on learning how to re-pot an orchid, and the participants will be able to transplant their own to take along with them to grow at home. Each child must be accompanied by an adult, and each adult can only act as a chaperone for two children. The ticket price, which is for one child and chaperone pair, is $10.00 each. A printer can use comb binding and other printing services to craft simple plant care manuals for each person who takes part in a workshop like this.

The workshop, which will be dedicated to all things orchid, will be held on October 14th at Duke Farms in Hillsborough. More details can be found on the host’s Facebook page.
