Cherry Hill gets recycling grant

Cherry Hill will receive a grant for recycling from the state of New Jersey environmental protection agency.

Coming in at $114,682, the grant is given to cities and towns based on the success of their recycling programs. It funds recycling coordinator jobs, provides people with recycling containers, and goes towards pickup in local neighborhood. Often, funds are used to improve recycling centers and provide education to consumers.

Recycling is an important way for people to protect the environment, said Katherine R. McCabe of the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency, as it conserves resources, reduces waste, and lowers the emissions of greenhouse gases.

The grant received this year is based on Cherry Hill’s recycling program in 2017. Part of the funding is used to educate residents about products that can be recycled.

Some materials that can be recycled are plastic bags, auto parts, plastic, Styrofoam cups, pizza boxes (if clean), and syringes. The program Recycle Right New Jersey provides social media and a free app to locals. One app tells consumers what can be recycled and what cannot.

The grants will be used to improve the recycling and outreach programs. Cherry Hill has printers that design and provide banner printing that can help raise awareness.

Cherry Hill will use the funds to study the food waste system and design the most effective solution that works for the community.
