Another benefit is that employers will receive relief from the current skilled worker shortage. Five three-year degree paths are planned one of which will be police studies.

PSU criminology and criminal justice associate professor Laura Dykstra elaborated on the reasons for the shorter degree paths saying:
“There are clear areas of employment where we are seeing a dearth of applications, and law enforcement is one of them. the university. Departments are feeling really challenged to find highly qualified candidates. They are having issues with candidates that are not able to bring the writing skills and communication skills that are needed.”
In addition to police studies other shortened bachelor's degrees include cybersecurity, business administration, robotics and outdoor adventure leadership, with each requiring 96 credit hours.
The two other New England institutions of higher learning that have received approval from the New England Commission of Higher Education to offer three-year degrees are Merrimack College in Massachusetts and Rhode Island’s Johnson and Wales University.
