The rating is the result of patient survey data with hospitals making this list having earned a Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) 5-star cleanliness rating. The perceived cleanliness of hospitals by patients in inpatient stays is gathered by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.

The CMS HCAHPS survey measuring patients’ opinions on inpatient hospital care is a standardized national survey. Patient responses about the frequency of their room and bathroom being cleaned during their hospital stay.

This latest Nation’s Cleanest Hospital rating was created from data collected from July 2024 through June 2025 and then updated by CMS in May 2026. Per Becker’s Hospital Review this year’s 5-star cleanliness rating was earned by only 396 hospitals nationwide.
