Traditionally two separate entities, the Plymouth State University (PSU) police department and the town of Plymouth police department have merged into one force, which may or may not be a permanent situation.
The consolidation of the two departments was brought about by the retirements on January 31 of the PSU police chief and the head of public safety for the school. Since the absence of Chief Stephen LeFebvre and Sgt. Joseph Vogel, the university has been patrolled by the Plymouth Police Department, which has also been responding to criminal reports.
Government departments at every level, including law enforcement, utilize Print shops to keep the public apprised of important information.
LeFebvre retired around four years ago from the Plymouth Police Department after serving 20 years on it, and then began a stint as the PSU police chief. In addition to the recent loss of university police personnel, the town’s department also experienced the retirement of its chief, Alex Hutchins, on December 31.
Scott Weden, the town manager of Plymouth, acknowledges that in recent years attracting police officers to the community has been challenging, so the merging of the two departments may become permanent. The department and town officials are working together to create a memorandum detailing costs and hiring requirements of public safety services for Plymouth and PSU.
The current Plymouth police chief is Nate Buffington, who was former Chief Hutchins’ deputy chief.
