Early history
The area that became Plymouth is part of the Pemigewasset Valley, named after the river that carved it. The Pemigewasset rises at Profile Lake in Franconia, flows south to merge with the Winnipesaukee River, forming the Merrimack, which eventually empties into the Atlantic.
