The city of Nashua is located in Hillsborough County in the state of New Hampshire, and is situated at the spot where the Nashua River joins the Merrimack River. Originally established as a fur trading settlement in 1655, Nashua then developed into a textile town during the industrial revolution and by 1836 had three cotton mills operating within the town using the waterpower of the Nashua River. On December 31, 1836, the town changed its name from Dunstable to Nashua.
Nashua was a thriving industrial community with numerous mills along the river until waterpower was replaced by modern energy sources, and by the First World War most of the mills had moved south with the last one closing in 1949. This slow decline led to large levels of unemployment but in the early 1950’s Sanders Associates, a defense contractor, moved into one of the empty mills and the city began to recover.
