For runners in Winston-Salem, their ultimate test is coming up. This is the 30th year for the race known as the Ultimate Runner, which is held in Hanes Park. According to an article in the Winston-Salem Journal, its popularity apparently stems from the fact that it challenges competitors with five separate races, which demand varying degrees of speed and skill.
In order, runners tackle a mile run, a 400-meter run, an 800-meter race, and a 100-meter sprint, all of which take place on a track within the park. After that, all the participants run a 5K through the park before darkness falls.
The race attracts runners of all ages, some as young as nine. Jack Ibraham, who is 80, has run every race for the past 29 years, and says he's not going to miss this year either. Another dedicated participant is Dan Besse, 61, who has run 25 straight times. Besse, who sits on the city council, says the Ultimate Runner is one of a few events “to which I'm most loyal.” Besse describes is as a test of a runner's ability to handle a quick succession of difficult events.
The Ultimate Runner takes place tomorrow, Saturday, June 25, 2016, starting at 4.30 pm.
