An ordinance has been approved by the Winston-Salem City Council so that residents can create natural landscapes in their yards using pollinator-friendly and/or native plants.
Shaleen Miller, Sustainability Director, said that there are many benefits of having natural yards. Miller said that they reduce greenhouse gases as they require less mowing, conserve water, and encourage birds, bees, and butterflies. She added that, in the long run, they reduce the amount of time a homeowner spends in maintaining a more traditional yard.
These natural landscape areas need to follow rules about the size of the natural area, borders, and the relationship to property lines. Signs need to be displayed identifying them if they are visible to the public.
Local Print shops are often used by a city to make such ordinances known throughout the community. Flyers and Brochures can provide more details about building healthy soils, tips for planting, and benefits of such natural landscape areas.
The city still has rules about traditional lawns in that they are no more than eight inches high. If grasses are to be used in a natural area that will be more than eight inches high, then these areas need to be registered with the Sustainability Department of the city.
