The city has opened its pools to coincide not only with the onset of warm weather, but also the last day in class for students in the local school systems.
According to reports, Dick Butler, who supervises the city's aquatic program, thinks that diving into a pool is the best way to celebrate the end of the school year.
Some of the facilities had been open with limited hours since Memorial Day, but now all are in operation. They are Bolton, Kimberly Park, Polo, Mineral Springs, Happy Hill, Parkland, Reynolds Park, and Sprague.
The opening of the pools is also good news for people looking for work; Winston-Salem hired 61 lifeguards, and will hire an additional nine, so that five lifeguards will be present at each pool.
Approximately 50,000 people typically use the pools in any given year. The city hopes to increase the number of users by adding spraygrounds to the Happy Hill and Mineral Springs sites. These new features are similar to those already in place at Kimberly Park and Bolton.
There is an admission fee of $3 for adults and $2 for children 17 and under, while children under two are free. The city provides free swimming lessons for children and adults.
The city might consider working with a postcard printing company, creating cards to mail to residents informing them about the opening and offering details on the free lessons.
