The upcoming season is the 70th for the Winston-Salem Symphony, and the orchestra has just announced some of the highlights it has planned for its audiences.
The season will open with a gala concert featuring pianist Andre Watts, who will play the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2. Also on the program that evening are the ‘Carmen Symphony’, which is an arrangement by Jose Serebrier of the famous Georges Bizet opera, along with the ‘Egmont Overture’ by Beethoven.
Also upcoming is an audience favorite, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which calls for a full chorus and orchestra, and includes the famous ‘Ode to Joy’.
The orchestra was founded in 1946 on the campus of Salem College, as a civic orchestra. In 1952, the symphony was incorporated, and John Iuele was hired in 1955 as its first ever full-time conductor. The symphony today is under the baton of its music director, Robert Moody. It plays both formal concerts, and less formal ‘Kicked Back Classics’ programs, aimed mostly at younger audience members, at which time Moody shares educational insights about the music.
The season runs from September of 2016 through May of 2017, with ticket sales starting in August. Orchestra management might consider working with a brochure printing company on a colorful booklet for Mailing to area residents, outlining the season and the history of the symphony.
