Winston-Salem, North Carolina, began as two neighboring towns. Salem, settled by Moravians and named for a town mentioned in the Book of Genesis, was built in the eighteenth century. Winston was formed from land sold by the Salem congregation and named in honor of Revolutionary War hero Joseph Winston. A 1913 referendum combined the two towns.
