The Winston-Salem City Council has approved plans by the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS) to transform sections of Northeast and East Winston.
What was once the Brown Elementary School on 4.5 acres of land will become the site for 12 new apartment buildings, each of which will have 81 units of mixed-income housing. This project is part of a larger development by HAWS to demolish 244 antiquated housing units in Cleveland Avenue Homes and the construction of new mixed-income housing there as well. Cleveland Avenue Homes is north of 14th Street and west of Cleveland Avenue, and extends to New Hope Lane and 17th Street.
What is left of the Brown Elementary School will also need to be demolished. It served the people of eastern Winston-Salem from 1919 to 1984, when it was abandoned.
When the project is completed there will be 122 market-rate apartment units, 85 subsidized workforce housing units, and 199 low-income housing units. These will be dispersed throughout the project so as not to isolate those in lower-income housing from those in other income brackets. The executive director of HAWS, Kevin Cheshire, said that he is hoping the financing will be lined up for the project by February 2022, with construction to begin in late spring or early summer that year.
