Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has launched a virtual reality training program for nursing students.
The School of Filmmaking at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts is collaborating with WSSU to make this program possible, and an appropriation from the North Carolina General Assembly was provided by the North Carolina Collaboratory to fund the program. The two schools were awarded close to $800,000 for the digital design and implementation of the program.
The program will provide nursing students with real-life scenarios they may encounter when working in the real world at hospitals and other facilities. They will be in their own virtual worlds caring for patients so they can learn from their mistakes before they start their real positions. Local Print shops are often called upon to create Brochures and Flyers with more information about programs to promote them throughout the region.
Dr. Tori Brown, nursing professor at WSSU, said students are actually giving care, including giving medications and talking with doctors. Brown added that this platform will enable them to do everything they would do in a hospital.
Talking about the potential of modern technology within the medical sector, Brown also noted that virtual reality is highly intuitive and allows students in many different settings to mimic the real world and provide a safe environment.
