A math tutoring program will be piloted this fall in the schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. The program has been documented to help thousands of students succeed in the subject.
Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) runs the program and is a non-profit organization founded in 2013. Since then, it has worked with many Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to provide one-on-one tutoring sessions with students in grades one through five. A Program Coordinator is placed in the school to support volunteer tutors who work with students on an individual basis during the day.
School leaders in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County say that this is a crucial time for students. Velvet Simington, math director of grades kindergarten through 12, said that some students are two grade levels behind in foundational math concepts and only 44% of fourth graders are proficient in math.
The pilot school will be Bolton Elementary for HMT for the next academic year. Cheryl Frazier, principal of the school, said she has spoken with many families about how their children will benefit from the program. Flyer printing can also be used in situations to provide more information about programs and their outcomes.
Simington said that the annual report from 2022 of Heart-Math Tutoring showed that 97% of students made meaningful growth on program assessments, and over 90% of teachers said that students were enthusiastic and confident about math because of the program.
