A new section of the northern beltway around Winston-Salem is now open, and is part of a project to provide motorists with a faster way to cross the city.
This section is part of the eastern loop that runs from US 311 for 6.9 miles to University Parkway. This section runs along the northeastern part of the city.
This project was started in December 2014. Two years ago, the two sections between US 311 and US 421/Salem Parkway were opened. These sections have been named NC 74. Local Print shops are often hired to create printed maps of such projects so that those in the area can keep abreast of their progress.
The eastern loop, when completed, will be just over 17 miles long and comprise one-half of the Interstate 74 corridor. This project has a cost of $1.067bn. The western loop will comprise the opposite half of the project and is expected to cost $673m. The North Carolina Department of Transportation expects this project to improve safety and mobility, to reduce traffic congestion, and increase commerce in the area.
There are still some right-of-way acquisitions that need to be acquired for the remaining sections of the western loop. The entire eastern section of the project is expected to be completed by Fall 2026, with the southeast sections of the project currently under construction.
