New data science center to come to Winston-Salem

A grant of $1.5m has been awarded to Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) for the purpose of establishing an applied data science center.

The center will enable collaboration between domain and computer scientists to expand the education of data science and enhance interdisciplinary research.

Principal investigator (PI) for the grant and associate professor of computer science at WSSU, Dr. Debzani Deb, expressed excitement about having the ability to promote data intensive education and discovery. Deb added that the University is looking to build a community for data science that will enable transformative changes at the University and create an inclusive model in data science education and research, having lasting effects at both the state and federal levels. The Research Opportunities Initiative of the University of North Carolina (UNC) will be funding the Center for Applied Data Science (CADS). The Center will focus on many activities including annual symposiums and seminar series, career development in data science, innovation, and incubation, and curriculum enhancement as well as outreach to the community and schools. Five faculty fellows and their research initiatives from WSSU will be supported by the Center, and will be joined by seven undergraduate student researchers, five graduate students, and one post-doctoral researcher.
