The United State Department of Labor is giving Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem a grant of $5m to lead an effort in the region to improve educational programs leading to jobs in manufacturing. The college is one of 11 across the country and the only college in the state to receive such a grant.
Forsyth Tech will partner with seven other community colleges in the area in a region covering 12 counties, with the aim being to produce better trained workers for the advanced manufacturing sector, and a higher number of them. Existing training programs and classes will be revised, and new ones created in such advanced manufacturing areas as industrial and welding maintenance, mechatronics, and machining. Colleges like Forsyth can use brochure printing to inform interested students about their new programs and their benefits.
Working with manufacturing companies in the area, the consortium will develop a badge program, which is a new type of credential for education, that will enable students to earn badges for the skills and knowledge they have learned. As local companies will be working to develop this new system, these badges will enable potential employers to determine the abilities of applicants and the decide which are best suited for the jobs they need to fill.
Some classes will start as early as this fall, with others expected to launch in 2022.
