Major Winston-Salem road construction project to get underway

The Northern Beltway reconstruction project in Winston-Salem is expected to close a major road in the city.

The project will close High Point Road between Glenn Hill Road and Union Cross Road, and will replace the culvert running under High Point Road. Other work to be undertaken will include roadway development, bridge construction, and additional grading, which will take place in the area along Interstate 74 and High Point Road.

A new interchange will be built that will connect the section of the Northern Beltway that is 1.5 long and under construction near Interstate 40 to Interstate 74. There will be multiple ramps and flyover bridges at the interchange that will cross High Point Road.

Pat Ivey, Division 9 Engineer of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), expressed his excitement about working on this part of the beltway. He said that many people have worked on other sections of the road and now it is time to put effort into this section. The project help make the county’s major highways safer, including Salem Parkway and U.S. 421 and U.S. 52, and will enable traffic to move more freely.

The road will close on Monday, March 13 with work on the project expecting to run through 2026.
