Improvements proposed for Winston-Salem alley

City officials are saying they want to convert a 46-year-old passage into a well-lit alley that will be attractive to pedestrians.

A plan has been presented to the city by the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, that would make improvements to the alley between Trade and Cherry streets.

In 1970, the passageway was included as part of a renovation project - the Trade Street Pedestrian Mall. This was designed to compete with outlying shopping centers, and to help the effort, part of North Trade Street was closed to vehicular traffic. The alleyway was part of the attempt to make pedestrian access to the mall easier, but the mall was eventually torn down and the street reopened, leaving the alleyway dark and disused.

The partnership's board's Vice Chairman, Ralph Womble, said to members of the city's public works committee that the passageway is “downright scary”. Some of the ideas for improvements include better lighting, art mounted on walls, landscaping that carries greenery into the alley, and Signs telling where the alley leads. The idea is not to create a major shopping destination, but a pleasant walk for people in the area. A public meeting is planned to discuss the project.
