Ashley Furniture took over an old tobacco warehouse in Advance, a town near Winston-Salem, to create its manufacturing and distribution center two years ago. On October 17, 2014, the renovation and expansion was completed and celebrated with a grand opening.
The new center comprises 2.8 million square feet, including a just-finished addition that comes in at 1.1 million square feet.
Among the local officials who attended the ceremony were North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, Representative Virginia Foxx, Senator Richard Burr, and hundreds of Ashley employees, many of whom work at the new facility.
Ashley executive William Koslo said the company plans to expand the plant, though no date has been set to begin construction. When the expansion is finished, the North Carolina plant will be Ashley's largest. Ashley president and CEO Todd Wanek added that the new plant is not yet fully operational, since the company is waiting for additional equipment to arrive, but that it should be up and running by year end.
Currently, there are 657 employees at this location, with 150 more job expected to be added in the near future. This is great news for jobseekers in the area, since the plant is less than twenty miles from Winston-Salem.
