Dental clinic to begin working with schools

The Cleveland Avenue Dental Center is working to bring dental care to kids in the area who are without a regular provider.

In January, the clinic will enter into a partnership with schools in Forsyth County, including those in Winston-Salem, to offer dental procedures, which include screenings, to all students.

The initial program will take place at Forest Park Elementary, and will expand if it is well-received. The director of the dental clinic, Emily Smith, said the purpose of the program is to reach members of the community who do not have dentists.

Approximately 650 students attend Forest Park, and they will take permission slips home. Those families that are interested can sign the slips, and the students will return them. They will then receive dental screenings at the school and results will be shared with the students' parents.

Children who are insured through either NC Health Choice or Medicaid, which are insurance programs sponsored by the government on behalf of children from low-income families who cannot afford insurance, will be able to receive further services, like sealants or cleanings. All the dental work will be done at the school. If additional work is necessary, the students will be referred back to the clinic, or to other providers.

The clinic could create Brochures explaining the screening program, and mail them to parents in the local area.
