The Mozilla Foundations has awarded Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) a Responsible Computing Challenge Grant Award, in order to ensure that students learn how to use artificial intelligence (AI) ethically and responsibly.
There are over 200 students at WSSU who are studying how AI can be used in such courses as statistics, chemistry, English, art, and world films. The goal of the project, whose principal investigator is Dr. Debzani Deb, is to provide graduates of WSSU with the knowledge of ethical skills and guidelines related to AI so that they will be able to analyze and recognize issues that may occur from its use and development in their daily lives and careers. Communicating these issues to a wide range of audiences will also be an important topic discussed. Such communications may take the form of Flyers and pamphlets created by local Print shops.
Faculty Adopter Awards have been given to seven faculty from the departments of business, arts, science, social, and health science as part of the grant. Each of the faculty attended training to create contextual models that can be used in their courses.
Those involved in the project will also formulate limitations, challenges, and improvements for the future with the goal of enabling other Historically Black Colleges and Universities to use this approach.
