The Small Business Administration (SBA) has awarded a grant to S.G. Atkins Community Development Corporation to establish a Women’s Business Center at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU).
This Women’s Business Center will enable the current business development program at the Enterprise Center incubator to be expanded as it will create an increase in the business services provided over the next five years. A full-time program director will be hired and there will be classes for the current entrepreneurs and incubator occupants in the community. There will also be an advisory committee of resources and mentors to address barriers to economic mobility and increased access to the SBA to its loan and grant programs. Executive director of the S.G. Atkins Community Development Corporation, Carol Davis, said that the number of women-owned businesses is growing quickly. Davis added that the strategy will be to help local businesses be successful in an increasing online environment.
The Enterprise Center provide affordable office space and support for start-ups and emerging companies as well as faculty from WSSU. The Women’s Business Center will be the sixth such center in North Carolina and the second at a historically black university in the state.
