The nOg run club, based in the Triangle, recently held an event to try and break the Guinness world record for a run in which participants wear flip-flops. The run drew a total of 1,346 participants from throughout the Raleigh area, enough to break the world record. However, the group will have to submit paperwork and video evidence to Guinness before they can have an official win.
This won’t be the first time nOg has held a successful event. At first, they tried to break the record for the largest number of people running in kilts. When they were unable to do so, they began flip-flop runs, and have been successful in four different years. According to Elizabeth Pagano, president of the club, nOg donated more than $95,000 to various non-profit organizations and charities in 2017.
The run this year, known as the World’s Largest Flip-Flop 1K, didn’t have quite enough runners to qualify, so organizers took pairs of flip-flops and went through the crowds, looking for volunteers to join the run. They were able to find ten people to take part, enough to break the record. nOg raises $10 per runner.
Participation wasn’t limited to nOg members. Many runners simply wanted to take part in the effort to break a world record.
