As I Lay Dying was founded in 2000 in San Diego; the first lineup came together in 2001, and they released their debut album, “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” that same year. Their first album and the follow-up, “Frail Words Collapse,” released in 2003, enjoyed moderate success.
The breakthrough came with their third album, “Shadows are Security,” which dropped in June 2005. It made its debut at No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart, and also put the band on the Billboard 200 chart for this first time, at No. 35. The fourth album did even better, going to No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart, and hitting the top spot on the Top Rock chart.
The group has received numerous nominations and awards, including being chosen as “Artist of the Year” in 2005, 2007, and 2008, at the San Diego Music Awards. Their song “Nothing Left” won them a Grammy nomination in 2008. Among the bands they cite as influences are Slayer, Metallica, and Judas Priest.
A review of a live performance says:
“Great setlist and live performance. Seventh time seeing this band over the last 17 years and they always bring it.”
