Several factors, including the LYNX Blue Line Extension, an increase in the number of cyclists on city and campus streets, and multiple off-campus housing developments at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Charlotte campus, have lead local leaders to push for improvements in the infrastructure that will connect cyclists throughout the area around the university.
According to bicycle program manager with the Charlotte Department of Transportation, Ken Tippette, there will be a Cross Charlotte Trail that will provide a route free of motor vehicle traffic from the Cabarrus County line to Pineville. This trail will offer those in the area a wider choice of options for transportation, such as biking and walking, in addition to using private automobiles.
Peter Franz, the landscape architect for UNC Charlotte’s campus for nearly 20 years, has been involved with planning off campus to improve connectivity for pedestrians.
So far, the university has added extra space to the bike lane system, and the Charlotte Department of Transportation has recently completed several projects that added bike lanes and sidewalks to major roads and created a multi-modal path to the main entrance of the campus, which will eventually continue to the Toby Creek Greenway.
The use of brochure printing companies to Print material about these projects is a good way to keep the community informed and encourage using alternate means of transportation to and from campus.
