This Friday evening, July 20, the football field of old Bell County High School in Pineville, North Carolina will be the host for a giveaway of back-to-school supplies for families in the area who are unable to afford school supplies and clothing for their children. The Lighthouse Mission in Bell County, which is sponsoring the event, is probably using poster printing and flyer printing to encourage residents in the county to donate the much-needed items.
School supplies are being packed, shoes are being sorted, and clothes are being folded this week by volunteers from East Flat Rock. According to Debar Ramsey of the First Baptist Church in East Flat Rock, people seem to take for granted that fact that most of them can easily afford school supplies whereas there are many others who cannot afford the basics such as pencils, paper, and pencil sharpeners.
With over 1,600 miners in the county out of work this year, the need for school supplies seems to be even greater, according to one of the Lighthouse Ministries Director, Sharon Teaney. The goal of the giveaway is to help those who are unemployed during the current lull in the economy.
People from all over the county have been donating heavily to the giveaway. The volunteers organizing the scheme have said that there are enough supplies for over 2,500 people. As part of the events during the evening, there will also be free haircuts, food, music, games, and other entertainment for the children and their parents.
