The board of commissioners of Mecklenburg County in North Carolina, which includes the town of Pineville, recently announced that 2013 marks the 250th anniversary of the county and that special celebrations will be held throughout the year.
Flyer printing and poster printing are no doubt being used to distribute material throughout the county so that residents can provides pictures, stories, or videos of meaningful moments about living in the county, be they happy occasions or sadder ones.
As part of the celebrations, there be will a birthday party held for the county early in the year and original television and online programming will be created. The government is partnering with many businesses and other organizations to make this celebration happen. Vilma Leeke, a representative from Steele Creek to the board of commissioners, has expressed her excitement about the way the county will be holding its celebration by telling its story through the voices and experiences of its residents.
People have lived in Mecklenburg County since 1763 and it was part of Anson County until it had a sufficient number of residents to become its own county. The Catawba River, which flows through the County, has always been a major attraction for people to live there.
According to Linda Blackwelder of Steele Creek, the county was primarily a farming community and early on was a very remote part of the area known as North Carolina. She added that although the boundaries have changed throughout the years, there is still plenty of history and many stories to be shared about the 250 years of the county’s existence.
