The construction of an aquatic center in Lake Wylie, just a short distance from Pineville, was recently approved by the Clover South Carolina School Board.
The contract for the $17.8m project was awarded to Beam Construction Co. of Cherryville, North Carolina. In addition to an aquatic center, the project will also include a 50-meter pool, a second floor and walking track, and a water park in the back of the building.
The outdoor water park is an additional feature being paid for by the Upper Palmetto YMCA, with the intention to increase membership. The YMCA may be turning to various printing companies to create promotional material to this effect. Once completed, the aquatic center will be operated in partnership with the YMCA.
According to Kelly Clayton from Cumming Corp., a project managing company, it is expected that groundbreaking will occur this month and the project will be completed by August 1, 2016.
Chief finance and facilities officer for the Clover School District, Ken Love, said that the contract was $360,000 above budget, but he confirmed that the district has the funds to be able to complete the project, as $20m is still available for other projects.
Some of the other projects currently underway in the district include construction of a new middle school, a new elementary school, and renovations at Clover High School’s Memorial Stadium.
