Wake County schools see student surge

A total of 20 Wake County schools have had to cap off their enrollment this term, with three schools combined, Holly Springs High School, Mills Park Middle, and Mills Park Elementary, turning away 175 students.

Among schools where the student population has exceeded capacity, Cary school Mills Park Elementary has had to say no to 109 students seeking to be enrolled this year on its own.

Cary is in one of the most rapidly growing counties in North Carolina, but it and other communities in the county have grown so fast that they have outstripped local resources, specifically, our school system.

The real estate market is slowing, according to WNCT.com, as families who would otherwise settle in Wake County change their mind when they discover there is little room in local schools for their children. This raises concerns that it could affect local businesses as well when the influx of new residents limits their growth. Moreover, companies are less likely to relocate here if local schools are already at capacity.

There is some relief in sight; voters in 2013 passed a Wake County bond referendum to fund at least three additional schools in areas most highly challenged by high enrollment. Print companies can prove useful for presenting voters with the facts in situations such as this one so that they can make an informed choice.
