Popular game company to move to Cary
Epic Games, the developer of the Fortnite video game, is looking to move its headquarters to what was once the Cary Towne Center mall.
The company purchased the mall property a year ago and is looking to rezone the site for the construction of a building that would have retail shops, office space, and a hotel. Chief development for Cart, Scot Berry, said Epic is starting the process of meeting with Town Council for the rezoning request.
The plans include a headquarters spanning 1 million square feet where the mall currently stands. Stationery printers are often needed for such moves, as updates are often needed for business cards and stationery. There would also be parking and an outdoor recreational area. A hotel with 200 rooms and 1.7 million square feet of office space would be part of later phases of the project.
Epic is also planning to create a greenway along Cary Towne Boulevard, Maynard Avenue and Walnut Street. Berry said that Epic is also offering improvements to six intersections that come out of the site or are adjacent to it. Epic will also need to widen part of Walnut Street and Cary Towne Boulevard as part of the rezoning, and provide rights-of-way for future improvements of intersections around the property.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2024.
